Uutta keittiöön: purkinavausapulainen ja tiskirättejä - Something new for kitchen: jar opener helper and dishcloths

Vuosia sitten tein ensimmäisen "apulaisen", jota kutsuin silloin "purkinavaajaksi". Eihän se mitään purkkia tai korkkia yksin avaa mutta antaa hyvin vipuvoimaa tiukkien korkkien ja kansien avaamisessa. Vanha on ollut kovassa käytössä ja jo hieman kulahtanut. Tein kaksi uutta, isomman kotikäyttöön ja pienemmän mukana pidettäväksi juuri pullonkorkkien avaamiseen.

Tähän tarvitaan vain kaksi samankokoista palaa liukuestemattoa, mitkä yhdistetään virkkaamalla ne yläreunasta kiinni toisiinsa.

Years ago I made my first "helper". I then called it a jar opener although it won't open any jar lids by itself but it is a great help with those stubborn lids that are tighly screwed on jars. The first one I made has been in heavy use and it is already pretty worn out and needed a replacement. I made two new ones, the bigger one for home use and the smaller, portable one for water/soda bottle lids. It is small enough to fit into a pocket and even a small handbag.

All you need: two pieces of the anti-slip mat that are attached together by crocheting them.

I also crocheted much needed new dishcloths, one using the waffle stitch and the other alternating single and half double crochet stitches.

Muffinsisytykkeitä - Cupcake kindlings

Sain inspiraation joulun alla Hanna Sumarin juontamasta ohjelmasarjasta Suomen kaunein koti: Joulukodit valmistaa sytykkeitä muffinsivuokiin. Sytykeruusujen tekeminen on jo tuttua ja tietysti materiaalia syntyy kananmunaostoksista mutta muffinsivuokavaihtoehto oli helpompi ja nopeampi. Sulatettujen kynttilänjäämien lisäksi voi käyttää koristeita mutta välttämättömiä ne eivät ole.

Before Christmas I was inspired by a program introducing local homes' Christmas deco to make kindling into paper cupcake liners. Earlier I've used egg cartons to make kindlings but this was a lot quicker and easier. In addition to melting candle stubs, all you need is paper cupcake liners and optionally some dried orange slices or small pine cones as decorations.

Purkkien uusiokäyttöä - Spruced up jars

Käsi- ja kasvovoidepurkkeja uusiokäyttöä varten. Suosikkini on tuo etualalla näkyvä pieni sinikantinen purkki.

I had a couple of hand and face moisturizer jars that I spruced up with pretty pictures. I keep bracelets (custom jewelry) in one of them. My favourite jar is the one with the blue lid.

We usually grow some special grass for Easter and add decorations in it. As usual, I forgot to buy the seeds and decided to use knitting yarn to make some artificial grass. I also crocheted a couple of Easter eggs to complement the decoration. Wishing you all a Happy Easter!

Junk journal

I was wondering what a junk journal is and found an answer like this in the depths of the Internet. This is a definition by the Arty Craftsy web site: "Junk journal is a handmade book made up of recycled items such as papers from magazines, brochures, patterned paper, music sheets, envelopes, packaging, brown paper bags, maps, greeting cards, post cards, doilies, to name a few. The book covers can be made from cereal boxes, old book covers or any hard card boards."

I had this book lying around that I thought would be perfect for a junk journal. Well, in addition to the cover, here's a sneak peek of the inside. It's not ready. I add stuff there only once in a while. But I have to admit that I'm having fun doing it.

Pakettirusetteja - Gift bows

Rakkaalla lapsella on monta nimeä: pakettirusetti, koristeruusuke, pakettiruusuke...ja varmaan monta muutakin. Näihin voi käyttää melkein minkälaista tahansa paperia tai myös ohutta kartonkia ja ne voi tehdä minkä tahansa kokoisiksi. Kiva pieni projekti.

I made some gift bows, paper ribbon bows, paper stars... or what ever they are called. You can use any kind of paper or even thin cardboard and cut the strips in any length and width. A fun little project.

CD't lasinalusiksi - Old CD's into coasters

Tein kokeilumielessä kahdesta vanhasta CD'stä lasinalusia lautasliinatekniikalla. Katsotaan miten ne kestävät käytössä.

I made two old CD's into coasters using the napkin technique. Let's see how they will last in use.

Purkinavaaja - Jar opener

Madame B.C:n blogissa oli kiva ohje purkinavaajaksi. Sitä piti heti kokeilla. Hankin Eurokankaasta palan liukuestemattoa, leikkasin kaksi 20 cm x 20 cm kokoista palaa matosta ja virkkasin sinisellä puuvillalangalla palat yhteen. Sillipurkkia en tällä saanut auki kuitenkaan; ko.purkki vaati järeämmät "aseet".

There were nice instructions in Madame B.C.'s blog on how to construct a home-made jar opener. What you need is a piece of anti-slip mat and some crocheting yarn. I cut two 20 x 20 cm pieces from the anti-slip mat and crocheted them together with blue yarn. I already tried it on a jar of pickled herring but I couldn't get the lid open - it required sturdier tools.

Kesäkuumalla tuli ostettu pieni Pringles-purkillinen perunalastuja. Pesin purkin sisältä kevyesti uudelleen käyttöä varten ja päällystin sen meriaiheisella kankaalla Mod Podgen avulla. Ennen-kuvaa ei tullut otettua mutta Pringles-purkit lienevät tuttuja kaikille.


After finishing all the potato chips (or crisps), I cleaned the inside of the small Pringles tub and covered the exterior with some fabric using Mod Podge. A simple summer craft.

Ilmoitustaulun uusi elämä - Cork notice board renewed

Tämä ilmoitustaulu oli päässyt huonoon kuntoon ja sitä uhkasi kaatopaikka. Piilotin rumaksi kuluneen korkin kankaalla - uusi elämä ilmoitustaululle ainakin joksikin aikaa.

This cork notice board had seen better days and it was risking being thrown away. I covered the worn cork with some fabric and gave the notice board a new life for a while.

Aiemmin olen uudistanut pari saman tyyppistä ilmoitustaulu, kts. kuvat alla. I've given new lives to two similar notice boards earlier, please see the photos below.

Roskapurkki - Skräp burk - Mini tash can

Eräässä turkulaisessa majoituslaitoksessa oli kulhossa pieniä, vanhoja filmirullapurkkeja koristeltuna kuvalla käyttötarkoituksena taskuun tai käsilaukkuun mahtuva roskapurkki vaikka purkalle. Hauska idea. Noita filmirullapurkkeja ei enää saa mistään kun filmikamerat alkavat olla historiaa. Oikealla on ksylitolpastillipurkki, joka voisi ajaa samaa asiaa mutta se on yli kaksi kertaa isompi kuin filmirullapurkki. Ei mahdu ihan joka taskuun, keskikokoiseen käsilaukkuun kylläkin.

An accommodation facility in Turku had a bowl with old 35 mm film canisters decorated with an image and intended for use as mini trash cans in your pocket or inside your handbag. What a great idea! In this digital age these canisters are in short supply, though. On the right of the film canister I placed a canister that used to contain xylitol dragees. It's over twice as big as the old film canister but could serve as a mini trash can, too, and it fits well into a mid-sized handbag.

Iskihän se inspiraatio ja ompelin vielä yhden kahvipussikassin auki leikatuista Kulta Katriina -pusseista. Kassi sopii hyvin vaikka kevyiden tölkkien kierrätyskassiksi.

I made yet another bag out of coffee pouches. This time I simply sewed the pieces together. The bag is ideal for collecting light weight cans for recycling.

Parfyymipulloja - Perfume bottles

Tein pieneen Ikean laatikkoon (19 cm x 15 cm) parfyymipullokoristeen kylppäriä varten. Parfyymipullot olen hankkinut Berliinin joulumarkkinoilta muutamia vuosia sitten.

I got these perfume bottles at a Christmas market in Berlin some years ago. I put together the installation in a small IKEA box (19 cm x 15 cm) for my bathroom.

I planned to make a shopping bag out of coffee bags but turned out to have two baskets. Both measure 20 cm x 38 cm.
